Baltimore's Former Top Prosecutor Convicted of Perjury

Subheadline: Marilyn Mosby Found Guilty of Two Counts

Baltimore, MD (May 23, 2024)

A federal jury in Greenbelt, Maryland, has found former Baltimore prosecutor Marilyn J. Mosby, 44, guilty of two counts of perjury. The convictions stem from false statements Mosby made on her applications for COVID-19 pandemic relief loans.

Mosby, who rose to national prominence for pursuing criminal charges in the death of Freddie Gray, a Black man who died in police custody in 2015, was charged with four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice. The jury found her not guilty on the remaining charges.

The verdict is a significant setback for Mosby, who was once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party. She is expected to appeal the convictions.

The trial, which began on March 28, 2024, focused on allegations that Mosby lied about her financial status on applications for two Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans. Prosecutors presented evidence that Mosby claimed to have been self-employed and earned over $400,000 in 2019, when in fact she had received most of her income from her husband, who is a wealthy businessman.

Mosby's defense attorneys argued that she made an honest mistake on the loan applications and that she did not intentionally mislead the government. However, the jury rejected that argument, finding that Mosby had knowingly made false statements.

The convictions carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Mosby's sentencing is scheduled for August 23, 2024.
